Dreams

I wrote this poem tonight. I struggle with many things and sin far too often, but I think God is teaching me a few things, and I wanted to share. Though I do a few of these things as a side now and again, I sometimes wish to dedicate more time to them. Mom's work comes first--some of which includes painting. They're not exactly the things I really want to paint, so it's often more of a chore....But to follow the Lord means doing things cheerfully and realizing we can't always do what we want when we want. I desire to do things with a heart of love for God and my mom, and make her goals my priority while I am under her roof. The benefits of obedience far outweigh the sacrifice (something I've been reading about in Desiring God by John Piper). On the other hand, if I made the time and was more diligent, I think I could (the Lord permitting) do more with some of these things. Yet there may still be things I have to give up.
~

So many things I could try,
So many dreams slipping by.
Books to write,
Songs to sing,
Drawing and painting.

But when my mother does call,
I have to drop one and all.
I will do
What she says--
Her goals are mine, now.

One day I may have the time
To realize these dreams of mine.
But for now
I will do
All that my Lord wants.

Even dreams good and true
May not be what God wants me to do.
So I'll spread my hands,
Letting go, letting God
Take me and use me His way.
